Buckmaster is not just the company's CEO, but also the site's primary developer. He contributed to the development of web architecture, homepages, forums, personal sections, community moderation systems, and search engines.
The Controversy Regarding Craigslist
The Craigslist community faces one of its greatest problems in filtering out con artists. The website contains a section that discusses common scam techniques, so readers will know what to do if they encounter them. Scams may entail counterfeit money orders and checks, bait-and-switch schemes (where you believe you're getting one thing but end up with something else), identity theft schemes, phishing techniques aimed to get personal information, and other unethical and criminal acts.
A scam that has surfaced in multiple Craigslist communities involves a buyer paying more for an item than it is worth. In this fraud, an unknowing seller sells an item for a predetermined price on Craigslist — for example, $1,500. An interested buyer calls the seller and states that he will send a check for the item; however, when the check fails to arrive, it is written for an excessive amount. When the seller called the buyer to alert him of the disparity, the buyer apologized and stated that he had entered the incorrect amount because he had confused it with a different purchase. He requests that the seller deposit the check and wire the remaining balance. Unaware that the check is counterfeit, the seller cashes it and transfers the difference to the buyer. Once the bank investigates the check and determines that it is fraudulent, the seller is held responsible. Here, the innocent seller bears responsibility for the fraudster's success.
